Tandem values all of its driving fleet, from Company Drivers and Independent Contractors to its Brokered Fleet and network of Fleet Owners. Tandem has traditionally been a company owned fleet with nearly 80% of our equipment driven by Company Drivers. Yet, we offer pay and benefits unique to each type of driver and believe that we can be a home to any qualified driver. Be sure to look at our overview of pay and benefits below before deciding if Tandem is right for you.
If you prefer the security and benefits offered to Company Drivers, Tandem is the place to be. We have certain requirements that must be met before we can consider your application. If you are successful in meeting our standards of safety and excellence and successfully complete our Orientation Program, you will be pleased with the recognition and rewards offered. At the minimum, you must:
- be at least 23 years of age
- possess a Class A CDL
- have NO DUI, OUI, impaired, reckless, or careless driving violations in the last five (5) years
- not exceed three (3) moving violations in the last three (3) years
- not exceed six (6) points against your license in the last three (3) years
There are additional requirements such as drug/alcohol screening and reference checks etc. which will be explained by our staff. Also, any license suspensions or other concerns will be reviewed at company discretion.
(Exceptions made based on experience and driver's home-time needs)
Although meeting our standards of excellence is the first step to becoming a Tandem driver, it is also necessary to screen drivers by their location. We can extend our hiring area based on your experience and home time needs. However, we focus our recruiting efforts in areas where our lanes of traffic will consistently get you home. We are primarily looking for drivers in:
- Michigan (Southern Lower Peninsula)
- North Carolina
- South Carolina
- West Virginia

Overview of Company Driver Pay and Benefits Offered
Regional/OTR Mileage Pay
Tandem offers qualified drivers four mileage plans (Gold, Platinum I, Platinum II, and Platinum Plus) based on verifiable experience, safety, MVR record, and work history. Additional accessorial pay and bonuses are available so be sure to ask your recruiter our entire range of pay and compensation. All miles are based upon computerized commercial miles inclusive of deadhead (origin to destination and deadhead to next origin) and all are paid at the same mileage rate.
Communications and Recognition
Tandem's unique Driver Representative Program is another reason to consider Tandem. Some companies talk about communication, but Tandem acts on it. Our group of 25 to 30 Driver Reps (which include both company drivers and ICs) are elected by the fleet for a two-year term and meet on a monthly basis with the owner of the company, its executives, and representatives from each terminal and department to discuss fleet operations and make decisions.
Last, but not least, are the various forms of incentives, recognition and reward offered. From our Annual Safety and Awards Banquet which rewards any driver that excels in safety, productivity, and customer service to our S.H.A.R.E (Safety Has a Reward for Everyone), Tandem emphasizes the importance of driver recognition for a job well done.
A career with Tandem will be the best decision a professional driver can make. Many on our staff were once professional drivers who understand what life on the road is really like. Therefore, Tandem understands the struggles and frustrations of flatbed trucking and works diligently to make your work experience rewarding and successful.
Tandem is committed to giving every driver the tools needed to succeed in their driving career. On going instruction and training keep all drivers advised of new federal, state, and company requirements. All drivers are required to attend and pass a one week orientation program conducted at our training center at Michigan City, IN. Evaluation, training, and seating of drivers will vary based upon the Training Manager and possible Driver Trainer evaluations as well as the demonstrated skill level of each individual driver.
Orientation pay is $1,000 upon the successful completion of our Training Program. Driver applicants are provided lodging at our corporate driver facility and are paid $200 at the end of orientation with the remaining $800 broken down into two payments, thus establishing a two week hold back. Training pay (pay for riding with a Driver Trainer) varies based on experience. Call Recruiting for more details at 800-348-8532 Ext. 8140.
Tandem also provides late-modeled, state-of-the-art equipment that is well maintained to insure safe and timely service. Our company drivers have a long list of benefits that make Tandem the best flatbed company for drivers wanting to make us their “last stop”.
Tandem offers an affordable major medical health insurance plan for its professional drivers. In addition, two other health options are available for employees and their families at group rates. Tandem's Health Insurance Program includes dental, optical, life and disability insurance coverage. Optional supplemental cancer and critical care insurance is also available.
Bonuses and special incentives are available for goal oriented drivers. Tandem provides bonus opportunities for:
- Fuel economy
- Driver Referrals (recruiting other drivers to Tandem)
- Sales Referrals (suggesting other companies Tandem can service)
A 401k retirement program is available with employer contributions commencing on an employee's first year anniversary. Full-time drivers are eligible for enrollment upon being established as a seated driver. After the first year, qualified increases in the employer contribution are based on tenure.
