FAQ - Questions and Feedback

Company Drivers

Pay, Benefits, and Bonuses

How much will I get paid?

That depends on you, your experience, and your motivation. Tandem offers several pay packages based on experience and has several incentive programs for motivated professionals. For example, an extra $0.02 per mile can be earned by having port and border crossing credentials (i.e., passport and TWIC card).

In addition, certain fleets (e.g., Dedicated and certain Regional) may offer only one pay package due to the nature of the runs, and are generally based on a percentage of revenue.

How many miles can I expect on a weekly basis?

That depends on your location, type of lane (OTR or Dedicated), performance and motivation. In general, drivers run between 2,200 and 2,500 miles per week. However, your average may vary depending on where you live, and if you are willing to work a few weekends to bring up your average.

Talk to your recruiter about average miles for other drivers in your area and how they achieve their mileages.

Which employee benefits does the company provide for its drivers?

Please contact our Recruiters directly for a detailed explanation of all our benefits offered.

When can I get medical benefits and how much do they cost?

Health and dental benefits are available to eligible drivers on the 91st day of your employment should you choose to participate in our insurance programs.

The cost of our insurance varies for qualifying individuals based on coverage levels and status (i.e., single, two-person, or family). We also offer other benefits such as 401(k), paid life insurance, disability insurance, paid vacation time, etc.

Please check with your recruiter to confirm eligibility, time of availability, and specific cost.

What bonuses are available and how are they calculated and paid out to drivers?

Tandem offers a number of bonus opportunities to the motivated and productive driver.  Tandem believes each driver should be paid for their performance.  You can earn more with the following bonus programs:

  • Fuel bonus (up to $0.04 per mile)
  • Safety bonus (paid on mileage basis unless Dedicated/Regional driver and paid a flat rate)
  • Performance bonus (various programs paid on a cents-per-mile basis.)
  • Driver referral bonus ($1,500 per "seated" company driver - call for details)
  • Customer Referral bonus (up to $200 per customer)

Contact your recruiter for more details on the bonus programs, what the earnings potential are and how often you will be paid.

How much “home time” do Tandem drivers receive?

Basically, with adequate notice, you can be home most weekends or more. The main determining factor is where you live. If you live near one of our active lanes, your home time will be directly affected.

KEEP IN MIND, there is often a tradeoff between revenue and time home. If you want more miles, you may be home less. If you are more interested in being home, we can accommodate this, however your miles will be affected.

May I take my truck home with me?

In most cases, you will be authorized to take your truck home when you are on home time.

After completing our online application, if you meet our basic qualifications, we will notify you that we received your application and that it is being reviewed.  If you do not hear from us, it probably means that you do not meet our basic requirements.  As we may receive up to 400 applications in a week, we are unable to respond to applicants that do not meet our minimum requirements.  Often we get applicants who are outside our hiring area or who are students and have no driving experience.

If we accept your application, we may contact you to clarify any questions and then will order your DAC report to verify past employment. We will also order an MVR to review your driving record and any violations you may have.  After all the reports have been received and we have all the documentation necessary for a complete evaluation, we will present your application to our hiring committee for final approval.  Once a determination has been made we will notify you of our decision.

What is your current hiring area?

Currently we are looking for drivers in 4 tiers.  That is, we have priority areas, but will consider almost any driver east of the Mississippi River if they have strong flatbed experience and a good driving record.

Our 1st Tier Hiring area (first and most desired area for hiring) is: OH, IN and Southern MI

Our 2nd Tier Hiring area is: KY, TN, GA, NC, SC, IL

Our 3rd Tier Hiring area is: PA, WI, WV, VA, AL

Our 4th Tier Hiring area is: All other states east of the Mississippi River.

Do I need flatbed experience?

We offer limited flatbed training to experienced van, reefer, or tanker drivers (in certain geographcial areas), but recognize that only a portion of those making a switch are successful. Our experience has shown us that most drivers excel in certain areas of trucking. Some prefer vans, some like tankers, and even within the flatbed world some prefer hauling steel over building materials or visa versa. Drivers tend to choose a style of driving they like and changing that environment is often a struggle.

During training, we will explain the lifestyle and securement differences of hauling a flatbed. We will teach you the proper securement techniques required of a flatbed driver. Our training program is available to those with little or no flatbed experience but we encourage you to think hard before deciding to make a change.

Where will my training take place and for how long?

Tandem conducts most of its orientation and training at its corporate office and training facility in Michigan City, IN. Tandem will arrange and pay for your trip and provide on-site lodging accommodations.

All drivers are required to attend a one-week orientation.

Your level of flatbed experience will determine your safety and securement training beyond the one week of orientation.

How soon can I drive my own truck without a trainer?

Basically, if you have 6 months of recent verifiable flatbed driving experience (in the last year) you should be seated in a truck at the successful completion of orientation.  However, based on your class performance and how well you do on our Road Test, the Training Manager may decide that you need some refresher training and require that you spend a specific amount of time with a Driver Trainer.

Equipment

What type of equipment does the company provide?
  • Tractors:  All our tractors are conventional sleeper units.  We currently operate three different brands.  Freightliner is our main vendor followed by Volvo, plus some new International units purchased in 2010.
  • Trailers: Tandem, maintains a fleet of predominantly East, all aluminum air-ride trailers.  However, we have found that Reitneour has also provided us with a high quality and very reliable product. We maintain the same quality standards from both vendors and have continued purchasing all-aluminum air-ride equipment. Our tractor and trailer specifications are designed to provide both safety and comfort to the driver and the lightest weight equipment for our customers.
  • Accessorial Equipment: After being assigned an excellent tractor and reliable trailer, you need quality accessorial equipment to properly and safely secure your load. Therefore, Tandem provides as much accessorial equipment support as we can. Our drivers have made many comments and provide suggestions for improvement.  The prime example is our two-piece tarp specification that was developed by the Driver Reps along with input from the fleet. The tractor and trailer specs have also been modified as a result of driver suggestions.
How old is your equipment?
  • Tractors: We rotate equipment every 4 to 5 years.
  • Trailers: Due to their quality and reduced maintenance needs, trailers have a longer useful life than tractors. Over 80% of our fleet are 2007 models or newer.
At what speed do you set your trucks?

Tandem trucks are set not to exceed 65mph.
